What do Scotties rates include?
Our online rates on our website include basic insurance with a excess of $3500 , taxes and fees, unlimited kilometres, airport pick up and drop off during office hours ( after hours options are available for a additional cost of $10.00 to $20.00 depending on the option you choose ), 24 hour mechanical breakdown assistance with the AA and Scotties special customer discounts.
Do I have to pay a deposit when booking?
No - We do not take payment when you book until pick up.
Do I have to pay a bond?
If you do not take our insurance you need to pay a $2000 bond. This is released when you return the car with no damage to it. It takes the bank 5 to 7 working days to return the money to your account. A valid credit card is required.
Can I hire a car if I do not have a credit card?
You can hire a car with a debit card. It must have the hirers name embossed on the front of it and you will be asked to take our basic insurance or put a hold on the card.
Do you have discounts for returning customers?
Scotties returning customers are rewarded with handsome discounts. If you are a company this is still the case even if different drivers. Just let our friendly staff know you have hired multiple times so they can lock in the discount.
What does it mean if a car type has on request beside it?
This means that we have limited numbers of this car or that demand during the time you are booking is high and so weened to check availability
What licence do I need to hire a car with Scotties?
We accept drivers licences from most countries, they need to be in English. International licences are also accepted.
Do Scotties offer one way hires?
Yes we do and if your drop off location is not on our list of offices and it is a reasonable length of hire talk to us as we may be able to help. We have contacts all over the country.
Can I take the car on the ferry between the North and South Island?
Yes - Scotties have a discounted ferry deal available exclusively to our clients through Bluebridge.
The Cook Strait ferry crossing is not to be underestimated! A very beautiful trip that can be a highlight of any New Zealand tour. Whales and dolphins are often seen along the way. It is therefore worth the extra to secure a day time sailing.
From a convenience point, Scotties recommends customers take their rental car across the Cook Strait rather than dropping your rental car off on one side and picking up another rental car on the other side. The time wasted picking up and dropping off far outweighs the extra cost of taking the rental car aboard. Also carrying all your luggage and having to watch it aboard can take the shine off this magical experience.
By the time one way fees and shorter hire periods are factored in often you are saving money by taking the rental vehicle with you.
Scotties offers an exclusive discount on the Bluebridge Ferry between Wellington and Picton on the car ferry.
This discount is seasonal and subject to availability by Bluebridge, so contact us directly for availability.

Can I pick up or drop off after business hours?
We have pick up and drop off options available for after hours bookings. It is best to contact our friendly team on 0800736825 so we can offer guidence on the best options for you.

When do free shuttles run?
We have a free shuttle running from 0900 to 1700 hours. You should checkin on our express service at www.scotties.co.nz/late

What level of insurance is included in the rental?
Basic insurance is included in all rentals. You have an excess of up to $5000 and can reduce this with our insurance options starting at $15.00 per day.
If you stay with the basic insurance you will be required to put a $2000 hold on your card.
Special conditions apply to under 25 year drivers, debit card holders and premium vehicles.
If I have an insurance policy with another party do I need to take Scotties insurance.
If you already have insurance we take a hold on your card and then if you have an accident you pay us immediatley and then you will need to claim the money back from the third party.
It is always far quicker and easier to take insurance directly with the car rental company.
Do Scotties have baby seats and child seats available?
Yes we do have baby seats available. Best to let our staff know you will be needing one ahead of time. We need to now the age of your child and seat required.
New Zealand has strict laws regarding child restraints.
Do Scotties rental cars have GPS in the car?
Depending on the car you have booked we can arrange a portable unit if not in car.
Can I hire snow chains and ski racks?
These are available at our South Island offices and on special request in Auckland. (They are not generally required in the North Island)
Do cars include unlimited kilometres and mileage?
Yes unless otherwise stated.
Do you allow pets in Scotties cars?
In special circumstances we allow pets. They must be contained and the vehicle must be returned clean to avoid additiunal fees.
Do cars have bluetooth?
Some do - some dont! Depending on vehicle.
Can I smoke in the car?
No sorry we can not allow smoking in the car out of courtesy to others.
We charge a fee for breaking this as it means we can not hire it out again until we can remove the smell.

What do I Need to be able to rent a car with Scotties?
To hire a Scoties rental car, all that's needed is a credit card - Mastercard / Visa / Amex - with your name on it and a full valid driver's licence.
Is New Zealand safe to drive in?
New Zealands roads are good, but obviously you need to take care.
Can I inspect the Rental Agreement or contract
Scotties use the standard New Zealand Government / Ministry of Transport supplied Rental Agreement you can view the agreemnt here

If I pick up outside office hours what is the process?

If you are arriving out of hours please contact us prior to the day of pick up so we can arrange your after hours rental car for you. We need to get all your information before we can hire you a car. We can offer pick up for an additional $20.00 providing you arrange this prior to the day of hire or an uber is around NZ$10 depending how busy they are.
What documents I need to bring when I collect my car?
When arriving to collect your hire car at the office or airport you will need to bring your drivers licence and a credit card.
Your card needs to have your name embossed onto the front of it and if you are not taking extra insurance at the desk you need to have enough to cover a hold.
How can we arrange an airport pickup once we have arrived?
You can request a shuttle by calling 0800736825 0n a New Zealand phone or +6493033912 on any phone for airport pick up during normal business hours.

Can I change my booking after I have booked?
Certainly if you see another car you like the look of or you have a change in needs we can easily do this for you, we just need to check availability.
Can I add another driver to my rental?
Of course we can. We just need to sight their licence and we can add them to you rental vehicle contract. The standrad fee is NZ$30 for the entire rental.
I am staying in the downtown area can we get a pick up from our hotel?
We can not do pick ups from downtown in Queenstown or Christchurch. You can catch a bus to the airport or uber.
Auckland city office pickups are available, call first otherwise the office is a half hour walk from the city centre or a short Uber ride. Buses are also easy. Just ask to get to 27 New North Rd, Eden terrace.
How long does it take to pick up or drop off a rental car?
Usually about 2 minutes

Can I change the Pick up and drop off locations of my vehicle?
Change of plans, no problem. We are always ready to help you travel New Zealand. You need to contact us by phone or firstname.lastname@example.org . We will need to check availability and if you are going from one location to another there may be a relocation charge.
Can I cancel my hire after booking?
You can cancel for free up to 3 day prior and then you need to contact us after this.
If you have booked on a broker website you will need to follow their rules.
Can I change my insurance cover when I pick up the car?
Of course you can. You can change this up to and including pick up. If picking up after hours you need to add this to the express form.
Do I have to purchase pre paid fuel at pick up?
It is completely optional.
What happens if i get a parking ticket or a police Infringement like a speed camera ticket?
The law is very strict on tickets and we have to get a signed witnessed Statutory Declaration completed. This is not free and can cost up to $75 which the driver is liable for.
We highly recommend you pay your fines quickly before they escalate.
Can I extend my hire?
If you need to extend we recommend calling earlier rather than later. This is usually all possible except sometimes in high season we have low availability.

What do I do if I have an accident?
Firstly make sure everyone is okay and call emergency services if someone is hurt on 111. This is a legal requirement
We ask you do not admit liability and if unsure obtain a police report to help our insurance company gauge who was at fault.
Take lots of photos of the scene and both cars getting the number plate and make of the other car.
Get the other drivers phone number and any other contact details plus their insurance company.
If there were witnesses get their details also.
What happens if I break down?
Our mechanics try to prevent problems but in the unlikely event this happens give us a call and we will arrange help.
Our roadside assistance runs 24hours.
Please note our roadside assistance is free for mechanical problems all other may be subject to an AA fee. All other call outs ie flat battery due to leaving lights on are subject to a AA fee.
I want to return my car hire early will I get a refund?
If you booked directly with us we can keep the days you have in credit for another time.
If you booked through an agency it is subject to the agencies policy, but generally no refund is possible
What if I am running late and can not fill the petrol tank to the right level?
Don’t worry we will just calculate the difference in cost and charge that amount as long as you alert a staff member at drop off there will be no penalty fee.
What if I am running late and can not drop my car off on time?
Don’t worry we will give you one hours grace and then will charge an hourly rate up to 2 hours and then it will go to another day.
I have forgotten to pay my toll road - what happens now?
The good news is you have 5 days to pay . Go to www.tollroad.govt.nz.
After 5 days you are subject to a penalty so best to pay.
After our hire are you able to return us to the airport?
As long as it is between the hours of 9 to 5 we are able to return you to the airport except Queenstown and sometimes Christchurch where it is a short walk to the airport.
Do I have to clean my car before dropping off?
You are expected to return the vehicle reasonably tidy.
Just please remove rubbish or put into a bag and remove personal items.
We have a wonderful team of groomers to do this for you. If it is exceptionally dirty and or there is a bad spillage or smell in the car we may charge a cleaning fee.
Please do not smoke in the car as many people are allergic to this. We do charge a cleaning fee for this.
