The rapid growth in tourism as witnessed by the numbers travelling through Christchurch International Airport (5.4 million passengers in 2007) can be attributed to many factors, including the growing popularity of New Zealand, and the South Island in particular, as an international destination of choice. The growth in the number of new carriers and affordable fare options have all served to put increased demand on existing facilities at Christchurch International Airport.
